His parents treated him independently, so he was oftentimes on his own. As a child, he spent weekends in the basement making stuff and creating. For example, he would take all of his LEGOs out of their boxes and mix them up to make his own things; he never followed the directions on the LEGO box, because he found it boring to build something step by prescribed steps.

He was using Photoshop and Illustrator for projects. In fact, he used to earn extra credit in science by redoing the diagrams for the overhead projector. He would take concepts from the textbook, make a graphic, and get extra credit for his work. He didn’t realize it at the time, but he was obsessed with using design to organize information.
