Early Life

Jack Dorsey was born on November 19, 1976, in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, to Marcia Smith and Tim Dorsey. He is half Irish and half Italian. His father was an engineer of medical equipment and worked for a company that developed mass spectrometers. Since the nature of his father’s job required the family to move frequently from one place to another, young Jack developed a passion for maps. In his younger days, Dorsey worked occasionally as a fashion model.

He is a technology entrepreneur and the co-founder and CEO of two successful businesses; Twitter and square.

Giant Footsteps

In High School

He went to ‘Bishop du Bourg High School’ in St. Louis, Missouri. He was known to be a quiet student as he suffered from stuttering. Jack was determined to overcome his problem and hence participated in a variety of oratory competitions and was finally able to speak without stuttering.

He developed an early interest in computers and was a member of his school’s computer club. He also spent considerable time studying the available model of IBM computers.

Age 15

His fascination with maps developed into a serious hobby during his teenage years. He became interested in the challenges of coordinating taxicabs, delivery vans, ambulances, etc. and created software programs for taxi dispatching and firefighting services when he was just 15.

In College/University

After high school, he enrolled at the ‘Missouri University of Science and Technology.’ Eventually, he transferred to ‘New York University.’ It was here that he came up with the idea of sharing short messages with friends. He did not stay long enough in the university to complete his degree. He came up with the idea that he developed as Twitter while studying at NYU.

Year 2000

In 2000, Dorsey started his company in Oakland to dispatch couriers, taxis, and emergency services from the Web. His other projects and ideas at this time included networks of medical devices and a "frictionless service market". In July 2000, building on dispatching and inspired in part by LiveJournal and by AOL Instant Messenger, he had the idea for a Web-based real-time status/short message communication service.

About Twitter

While working as a dispatcher he thought it would be a great idea to create an “instant messenger”. He approached Odeo, a software that allowed users to create, record and share podcasts. They were also interested in text messaging so they partnered up. They created an early version of Twitter in two weeks which attracted many investors. One who left Google to join Dorsey’s team to help create twitter.

On March 21 2006 Jack released Twitter to the world and would be a hit. Everyone would be using it to text their friends, put up tweets about different topics and gain a following. This app would become very popular but the biggest downfall was the character limit. For the first ten years, you were only allowed to create a post containing 140 characters which limited many users from using Twitter frequently. Although of this wordcount twitter still manages to report 150 million users using the app daily.
